Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media analyst for more than twenty years. She is also a seasoned public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource to educate women about their role in the narratives of pop culture, is her brainchild. Additionally, she serves as the executive director. Aiming to dispel the myths that are associated with women in pop culture, she also works to address issues relating to gender-specific harassment of women as well as others on the internet. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thought. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. This ambitious woman planned to launch an internet series on gender representation in games, however, she was also the subject of an online harassment campaign. The attack did be a deterrent, but it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards for her contribution to feministism.
